Taking the first step into a martial arts dojo can be intimidating. Will everyone be super fit? Will I look foolish? What if I can’t keep up? These are normal concerns that almost every martial artist has felt before their first class.
Let me put your mind at ease: your first class at Jan de Jong Martial Arts & Fitness is designed to be welcoming, educational, and fun. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Before You Arrive
What to Wear
For your first class, comfortable athletic wear is perfect:
- T-shirt or athletic top
- Tracksuit pants, shorts, or leggings
- Bare feet (we train on clean mats)
- Remove all jewelry for safety
- Bring a water bottle
You don’t need a uniform (gi) for your trial class. If you decide to continue training, we’ll help you order one.
Arriving at the Dojo
Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early. This gives you time to:
- Fill out a brief health and contact form
- Meet your instructor
- Get a tour of the facilities
- Ask any questions
- Calm any pre-class nerves
Your First Class Experience
The Welcome
You’ll be greeted by either myself or Sensei Maggie, who will:
- Show you where to leave your shoes and belongings
- Introduce you to the changing rooms
- Explain basic dojo etiquette
- Pair you with a senior student “buddy” if joining a group class
The Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
Every class begins with a warm-up designed to:
- Gradually increase your heart rate
- Loosen joints and muscles
- Prevent injury
- Include movements you’ll use in techniques
Don’t worry if you can’t do everything perfectly – just do your best and modify as needed.
Basic Technique Introduction (20-30 minutes)
For your first class, you’ll learn:
- Basic stances and footwork
- How to fall safely (ukemi)
- One or two simple self-defense techniques
- Proper breathing during movement
Your instructor will demonstrate everything multiple times and work with you individually to ensure you understand.
Partner Practice (15-20 minutes)
You’ll work with a senior student who will:
- Practice techniques at your pace
- Provide encouragement and tips
- Ensure your safety
- Answer any questions
Remember: everyone was a beginner once, and our students love helping newcomers.
Cool Down and Questions (10 minutes)
Classes end with:
- Gentle stretching
- Breathing exercises
- Time for questions
- Information about our programs
Common Concerns Addressed
”I’m not fit enough”
Fitness comes WITH training, not before it. We have students who started in their 60s, others recovering from illness, and many who hadn’t exercised in years. You’ll work at your own pace and gradually build fitness.
”I’m uncoordinated”
Perfect! Martial arts will improve your coordination. We break down every movement into simple steps. With practice, complex techniques become natural.
”What if I can’t remember everything?”
You’re not expected to! Learning martial arts is like learning a language – it takes time and repetition. Focus on enjoying the experience rather than memorizing everything.
”Will I get hurt?”
Safety is our top priority. As a beginner, you’ll work slowly with experienced partners who ensure your wellbeing. We teach you how to fall safely before any throwing techniques, and there’s no sparring until you’re ready (usually after several months of training).
After Your First Class
What You’ll Feel
- Physically energized (and maybe a bit tired!)
- Mentally stimulated from learning new skills
- Welcomed by a supportive community
- Proud of yourself for trying something new
